No one has waited longer for a smart phone OS update than Droid X owners, and word is spreading that the Android 2.2 Froyo update will be available soon. But a leaked version of an Android 2.2.13 upgrade is available now if you’re willing to risk it.

Media reports reveal Verizon may possibly be ready to roll out its official Froyo update soon  though no official announcement has been made nor any official date named.

But if you don’t want to wait any longer, you could go for the unofficial Android 2.2 Froyo update out now for rooted Motorola phones. But if you update with the unofficial version, Verizon warns you will not be able to download the official version later. Not sure what the downside is yet. Also, you must use Koush Bootstrap tool.

Here are instructions if you want to try. But remember, it may mean you will not be able to download the real version later.
